Recommended Books for Reformation Theological Retrieval

By “Reformation” theological retrieval, I am including those thinkers most faithful to the spirit of the Reformation, whether in the Continental, Puritan, Anglican, or Lutheran iterations. As with other “recommended books” sections, we are taking “the big boy approach.” In other words, the goal is learning by wide reading, and the inclusion of a circle of authors wider than my own tradition does not signify unqualified endorsement of the whole thought of such authors. It is only to ensure that serious students are aware of the best works in the relevant field. Finally, I expand the scope of this “reformational" circle,” in terms of time, down to the American Puritan era of the mid-eighteenth century so as to include Jonathan Edwards.
